Surrounding Objects™ is a design studio/workshop working across furniture, objects, installations, interiors, and architectural environments.
The practice explores processes of making, production, collaboration, and material research through projects that range from temporary structures and public installations to furniture and built works.
Often beginning with common or overlooked materials, the work explores questions of materiality, economy, construction, and methods of assembly. Surrounding Objects presents these works in varying formats as a living archive of ideas, collaborations, and built projects developed over time.
David Getty (USA) and Stephanie Getty (Indonesia) received their Masters in Architecture from Rhode Island School of Design in 2010. They worked for Salmela Architect in Duluth, Minnesota (USA) before relocating to Jakarta, Indonesia in 2014 to run their design studio, Studio Getty. In 2020, they launched Surrounding Objects at the Greenhouse section of the Stockholm Furniture Fair. They are now based in Naarm (Melbourne), where David is the Resident Sculptor at Gasworks Arts Park.
Surrounding Objects acknowledge the Aboriginal Traditional Owners of Country throughout Victoria, their ongoing connection to this land and we pay our respects to their culture and their Elders past, present and future.
